Hatchbox vs Render

The flat-priced alternative to Render

On Render, every web service, worker, cron job, database, and gigabyte of bandwidth is a separate line item. On Hatchbox, it's $10 per server — run as many apps and processes on it as the hardware allows.

Includes a 7 day free trial. $10 per server per month after that — unlimited apps.

Render earned its reputation as the modern Heroku: git-push deploys, preview environments, free TLS, and a genuinely pleasant dashboard. The developer experience is real, and for a first deploy it's hard to beat.

The pricing model is where teams eventually feel it. Each process is its own billed service — a web instance here, a worker there, Postgres compute plus $0.30/GB storage that can grow but never shrink, Redis on its own meter, and since 2026 just 5–25GB of included bandwidth with $0.15/GB overage after that. Autoscaling and 7-day recovery require the $25/month Pro workspace. It adds up quietly, then all at once.

Hatchbox flips the model: your apps run on servers in your own hosting account at list price, with the platform fee fixed at $10 per server. A second app on the same box costs nothing. Bandwidth is whatever your host includes — on DigitalOcean or Hetzner, that's terabytes.

Where the two differ

Per-server, not per-service

Render bills each web instance, worker, and cron job separately, and one service can't share an instance with another. Hatchbox charges per server — stack five apps and their workers on one box and the platform fee is still $10.

Your servers, root access

Render gives you SSH into a service's container — never the host. Hatchbox servers live in your hosting account with full root access. Tail logs, run a console, install anything. If you cancel, the servers keep running.

Bandwidth that isn't metered

Render includes 5GB (Hobby) or 25GB (Pro) of bandwidth, then charges $0.15/GB. Hatchbox adds no bandwidth charges at all — you get whatever your host includes, which is measured in terabytes on DigitalOcean and Hetzner.

Databases without the meter

Render's managed Postgres bills compute plus $0.30/GB/month storage that never shrinks. Hatchbox installs and manages Postgres, MySQL, and Redis on your own servers, with scheduled backups to S3-compatible storage included.

Real-world pricing comparisons

Render pricing verified August 2026, using their current workspace plans. Hatchbox examples use DigitalOcean; Hetzner runs even cheaper. Full details on our pricing page.

Production Setup

Two 2GB web instances, a worker, dedicated-CPU Postgres, and 1GB Redis, with a team workspace. Hatchbox runs the same workload for about $103/month vs. Render's ~$193 — a 47% reduction, before Render's bandwidth overages or the extra ~$55 for Postgres high availability.

Platform Fee

Render Pro workspace (teams, autoscaling) — $25.00
Hatchbox $10/server x3, unlimited team — $30.00

Web Servers

Render Standard (2GB / 1 CPU) x2 — $50.00
Hatchbox DigitalOcean 2vCPU / 4GB x2 — $48.00

Worker

Render Standard (2GB / 1 CPU) — $25.00
Hatchbox Runs on web servers — $0.00

PostgreSQL + Redis

Render pro-4gb Postgres + Key Value Standard 1GB — $87.00

Database Storage & Backups

Render 20GB @ $0.30/GB — $6.00
Hatchbox Scheduled backups to S3 — $1.00

TOTAL / MONTH

Render $193.00
Hatchbox $103.00

Hobby / Staging Setup

A small app with a worker, Postgres, and Redis on always-on instances (Render's free tier spins down after 15 idle minutes, and free Postgres is deleted after 30 days). Hatchbox runs it all on one $12 server — $22/month vs. ~$31 — and every additional app you put on that server is free.

Platform Fee

Render Hobby workspace — $0.00
Hatchbox $10/server — $10.00

Which one should you pick?

Render is a great fit if…

  • You never want to think about servers, even abstracted ones
  • Preview environments per pull request are central to your workflow
  • You're prototyping and the free tier's cold starts don't bother you
  • Your team standardizes on render.yaml infrastructure-as-code

Hatchbox is a better fit if…

  • You run several apps and don't want each process billed separately
  • Your app serves real traffic and metered bandwidth would sting
  • You want root access to your servers and databases you actually own
  • You want costs that stay flat as you grow — more RAM, not more line items

What customers say

I run 15+ Rails apps and static sites with Hatchbox. My bill went from $400/month on Heroku to $28/mo with Hatchbox & DigitalOcean combined.

If you want the most bang for your buck, Hatchbox / Hetzner / DigitalOcean is the killer combo. You can throw sooo much at this and it's crazy how inexpensive it is.
